City of Winnipeg helps curb safety risks with new temporary traffic calming measures

Winnipeg, MB – New temporary traffic calming curbs are coming to select streets.

These premade curbs will help improve safety while at the same time saving money.

“Every neighbourhood in our city deserves safer streets,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “That’s why we created a new road safety unit, to find practical, cost-effective ways to reduce risk and protect all road users. These traffic calming curbs are a smart solution that will make a difference right away.”

The installations, often referred to as TC curbs, are a fast and affordable way of temporarily changing the roadway layout. They:

  • Reduce safety risks until permanent traffic calming can be installed when a road is up for renewal or reconstruction
  • Minimize conflict between pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles
  • Make it safer for all road users

“Traffic calming curbs are an innovative solution to quickly address road safety concerns before major work takes place,” said Janice Lukes, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works. “This is a cost-effective project that will enhance neighbourhoods and protect vulnerable road users.”

The curbs are made of yellow concrete and marked by signage and poly posts. This makes them easier for drivers to see.

We’re teaming up with Art City Inc. to install asphalt art at select locations to boost visibility further and beautify the neighbourhood. Crews will install the curbs in August.

We selected locations where:

  • Speeding is known to be a problem
  • Intersections have wide corners
  • Visibility is poor at crosswalks

We will monitor driver behaviour on streets with TC curbs over the next year. We’ll make operational and maintenance adjustments as needed.
