Facility to remain closed until approximately fall 2026

Winnipeg, MB – Today, the governments of Canada and Manitoba, along with the City of Winnipeg, broke ground on the expansion of the St. James Civic Centre. The facility, located at 2055 Ness Ave., is being expanded to better meet community recreation needs.

“Modern recreational facilities are vital to the health and well-being of our communities,” said Doug Eyolfson, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg West. “The construction currently underway will build a modern and accessible space where residents of all ages can stay active and connected. We are proud to support projects that foster healthier, more inclusive communities nationwide.”

“Community spaces like the St. James Civic Centre are the heart of our neighbourhoods,” said Minister Glen Simard. “This expansion will ensure the facility continues to meet the needs of a growing and diverse population, now and into the future. Our government is proud to support infrastructure that brings people together and strengthens community well-being across Manitoba.”

“I’m pleased to see this investment moving forward and thank our federal and provincial partners for their support,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “These upgrades will ensure the St. James Civic Centre remains an accessible space for recreation, wellness, and community connection for many years to come and I appreciate the public’s patience while the facility is closed.”

“This expansion is about creating a space that reflects the full diversity of our community — where kids, families, and older adults alike feel welcome and supported,” said Councillor Vivian Santos, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. “The addition of new multi-purpose and program spaces, including dedicated space for the St. James Assiniboia 55+ Centre, ensures that older adults have access to meaningful social, recreational, and wellness opportunities. Community centres should serve everyone, and I’m proud to see this project move forward with that vision in mind.”

“St. James Civic Centre has been an important part of the community for over 50 years,” said Shawn Dobson, Councillor for St. James. “We’re excited to start construction on this expansion that will ensure it continues to provide recreation opportunities for many years to come. I’m also grateful to the Government of Canada and the Province of Manitoba for their support in making this project a reality. I am looking forward to welcoming everyone back when construction is complete.”

To complete the work as efficiently as possible, the St. James Civic Centre will be closed until approximately fall 2026. The Ab McDonald Arena will remain open during its regular ice seasons.

The expansion will include:

  • New multi-purpose room and meeting rooms
  • A new kitchen
  • An improved swimming pool viewing area
  • Administrative space and shared program space for the St. James Assiniboia 55+ Centre
  • Improvements to the auditorium and adjacent washrooms, and to the main building entry
  • Parking lot improvements

Residents can find alternate swimming, recreation, and leisure opportunities on our website at winnipeg.ca/recreation.

Residents are reminded that the community recycling depot remains closed and customers are encouraged to bring their recyclables to their nearest 4R Winnipeg Depot or community recycling depot.

In July 2021, the Government of Canada, Province of Manitoba, and City of Winnipeg announced $14 million in funding to expand the St. James Civic Centre. City Council approved an additional $3 million in October 2023. The total approved budget is $17 million.
