Winnipeg, MB – City of Winnipeg crews and contractors have made progress on the bypass system at the Fort Garry Bridge. Following mechanical repairs, the second pump needed to handle the flow in the sewer system was installed on the evening of February 21.
“There is still a risk of intermittent spills while crews continue to improve the reliability and operation of the bypass system over the next few days,” said Tim Shanks, Director of the Water and Waste Department.
The City is asking residents and businesses in the areas of St. Norbert, Fort Richmond, Richmond West, Waverley West, Bridgwater, Linden Woods, Linden Ridge, Whyte Ridge, Waverley Heights, and the University of Manitoba to continue reducing water usage while crews complete work on the bypass system.
Residents can conserve water by:
- Using cottage rules for flushing (only flush the toilet when necessary)
- Enjoying shorter showers and avoiding bathtub use
- Running only full loads of laundry and dishes
- Delaying washing cars
- Turning off the water when shaving or brushing teeth
We will continue issuing reports on untreated sewage online.
