Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a Hazmat incident and two house fires

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a hazardous materials incident and two house fires last night.

Lagimodiere Blvd. Hazmat incident

At 7:58 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023, WFPS crews responded to reports of a hazardous materials leak in the 800 block of Lagimodiere Blvd.

Once on scene, crews assessed the situation before making entry to the building. Once inside, the leak was safely mitigated and the building was ventilated.

No injuries were reported.

Furby Street fire

At 9:47 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 600 block of Furby Street.

When crews arrived to the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. Crews fought the fire from inside the house, declaring the fire under control at 10:16 p.m.

Crews completed a search of the structure and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The house had previously been damaged by fire in June 2023. As the structural integrity of the house is compromised, WFPS has arranged emergency demolition of the building which will begin this morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Marion Street fire

At 3:09 a.m. on Sunday, July 23, 2023, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 100 block of Marion Street.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke and heavy flames coming from the house. Crews applied water to the fire and then entered the house to continue fighting the fire. The fire was declared under control at 4:18 a.m.

Firefighters completed a search of the house and no occupants were found. Two Firefighters were assessed at the scene by Paramedics. They did not require transport to hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
