Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to three structure fires in 24 hours

Winnipeg, MB – In the past 24 hours, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) has responded to three structure fires.

Flora Avenue

At 3:21 p.m. on Friday, June 30, 2023, WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant two-and-a-half storey house in the 600 block of Flora Avenue.

At the scene, crews saw smoke coming from the house. Firefighters attacked the fire from inside the house, declaring it under control at 3:39 p.m.

Firefighters searched the building and no people were located inside. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Elgin Avenue

At 11:10 p.m. on Friday, June 30, 2023, WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant two-storey house in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue.

At the scene, crews attacked the fire from the inside, declaring the fire under control at 12:09 a.m.

Firefighters searched the building and no occupants were located inside. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available, but the house had sustained fire damage from a previous fire.

WFPS most recently responded to a structure fire at this location on May 17, 2023.

Lisgar Avenue

At 9:38 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, 2023, WFPS responded to a fire in a vacant house in the 100 block of Lisgar Avenue.

At the scene, crews saw smoke and flames coming from the home. Firefighters attacked from the inside but then were forced to change to an exterior attack as conditions deteriorated. Crews then switched back to an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 1:19 p.m.

Firefighters searched the house and no occupants were located. No injuries were reported. One neighbouring resident self-evacuated from their home and the City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team responded to help the resident find temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. This house is expected to be a total loss.
