Released: May 18, 2023 at 8:05 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to two structure fires last night.

Mountain Avenue fire

At 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 300 block of Mountain Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found heavy flames and smoke coming from the building. An aerial ladder was used to apply water to the fire and once conditions improved, crews entered the building and extinguished the fire from inside. The fire was declared under control at 12:28 a.m.

Many residents self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews and those remaining were assisted by firefighters. No injuries were reported

A Winnipeg Transit bus was deployed to the scene to provide shelter for evacuees. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team assisted displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental. Damage estimates are not currently available.

Elgin Avenue fire

At 8:57 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene they found heavy smoke coming from the building. Due to dangerous conditions, crews initially fought the fire from outside the structure. Once conditions improved, they were able to enter and fight the fire from the interior of the house. The fire was declared under control at 9:46 p.m.

Crews completed a search of the structure and no occupants were found.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
