Reduced speeds coming to seasonal bike routes starting this week

Released: May 2, 2023 at 2:07 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – A speed limit reduction will be phased in over the next week on five Winnipeg streets as part of the Council-approved 2023 seasonal bike route program.

Signage reducing the speed limit will be installed starting today on the following streets:

  • Lyndale Drive – Cromwell Street to Gauvin Street (30 km/h)
  • Wellington Crescent – Academy Road to Academy Road/Maryland Street (30 km/h)
  • Wolseley Avenue between Raglan Road and Maryland Street (30 km/h)
  • Churchill Drive between Hay Street and Jubilee Avenue (30 km/h)
  • Kilkenny Drive between Burgess Avenue and Kings Drive / Kings Drive between Kilkenny Drive and Patricia Avenue (40 km/h)

The speed reduction will be in place 24/7 from the time signs are installed through late October 2023.

Turn requirements at select intersections throughout each route as well as a one-block travel restriction on Wolseley Avenue only will be added following the City’s spring clean-up operations and will be in place weekends in May, June, September and October, and 24/7 through July and August.

Progress on this second phase of implementation and more information will be communicated at: winnipeg.ca/seasonalbikeroutes.

These routes were part of a slate of 15 formerly referred to as the Enhanced Summer Bike Route program. In early 2023 Council approved these five continue as designated seasonal routes until such a time as permanent cycling infrastructure can be studied.

The remaining 10 routes were approved to transition to full-time reduced-speed neighbourhood greenways throughout the 2023 season. This implementation will take place over the next four months with updates posted at: winnipeg.ca/neighbourhoodgreenways.
