St. Vital Bridge construction begins this week

Released: February 27, 2023 at 11:17 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – Major traffic delays are anticipated on Dunkirk Drive as work begins to improve the St. Vital Bridge and surrounding roadways.

Osborne Street / Dunkirk Drive, from Jubilee Avenue to south of the Kingston Row access roads will be reduced to one lane in each direction starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 1. During this first phase of work, we will be working on the southbound portion of the bridge structure. Pedestrian access will be maintained only on the east side of the bridge.

The closure will extend both north and south of this segment later in 2023 as work progresses onto the adjacent roadway. Various traffic impacts are anticipated to be in place until 2024.

Upon completion, the approximately $52-million St. Vital Bridge Rehabilitation project will greatly improve traffic, pedestrian, and cyclist experience, and community look and feel on and around the bridge.

The project includes:

  • New bridge surface to extend the bridge’s lifespan by 50 years
  • A new, widened multi-use pathway on each side of the bridge
  • Improvements to the pedestrian tunnel under the bridge
  • 1,450 metres of new multi-use pathways and sidewalks through the adjacent community
  • Better traffic flow and safer crossings at nearby intersections
  • Enhanced pedestrian and cycling connections
  • New trees and landscaping

Upon completion of construction in 2024, the speed limit on Dunkirk Drive from Clare Avenue where it meets Glenview Avenue will be reduced to 60 km/h from the current 70 km/h.

Throughout construction, Dunkirk Drive will become a Designated Construction Zone (DCZ) with the speed limit reduced to 50 km/h. Travelers through the area should expect significant delays and consider alternate routes such as St. Mary’s Road or Pembina Highway.
