Winnipeg, MB – Work is underway to make a high-traffic stretch of Tuxedo roadway work better for the community.
Officials from three levels of government gathered today to celebrate the start of construction on the $7.5 million Corydon Avenue Renewal project.
“Today marks an important milestone for the Corydon Avenue renewal project,” said Doug Eyolfson, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg West. “This work will improve transportation infrastructure, support active transportation and transit use, and renew important infrastructure that residents rely on every day. Corydon Avenue is an important corridor that connects neighbourhoods, businesses, transit riders, cyclists, and families across our community, and projects like this help build stronger, safer, and more connected communities while making it easier for people to move around safely and efficiently.”
“Investing in safer, more efficient transportation corridors is essential to supporting strong, connected communities across Manitoba,” said Carla Compton, MLA for Tuxedo. “This investment will upgrade a busy stretch of Corydon Avenue that residents and businesses rely on every day, and I'm pleased by the partnership between our three levels of government that revitalizes and improves our community for decades to come.”
The cost-shared project spans Corydon Avenue between Shaftesbury Boulevard and Kenaston Boulevard. Work includes roadway improvements, new active transportation pathways, Transit stop upgrades, and upgraded sewer and water infrastructure.
“This section of Corydon Avenue is a crucial transportation link in Southwest Winnipeg,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “These improvements will make Corydon safer and easier to use whether people are driving, cycling, walking, or taking Transit. Together with the planned renewal of Route 90, this work will help improve how people move through this important part of the city.”
“This project will provide improvements for all modes of transportation through the area,” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works. “It improves connectivity for these neighbourhoods and the surrounding communities. The new active transportation pathway links parks, schools, shopping and more – adding to our ever-expanding active transportation network.”
“Corydon Avenue is the gateway through Tuxedo to Assiniboine Park and Assiniboine Forest,” said Evan Duncan, Councillor for Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood. “I remain committed to tackling big projects like this throughout our ward to improve safety and connectivity for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and Transit users, while supporting our vibrant communities. I remain committed to delivering more projects, big and small, across our neighbourhoods.”
Highlights of the project include:
- Resurfacing all lanes between Tuxedo Avenue and Kenaston as well as westbound lanes from Tuxedo to Shaftesbury
- Adding a paved multi-use path from Park Boulevard to Kenaston to provide links through multiple attractions and fill gaps in the active transportation network
- Building new Transit stops, curb bump-outs and a new Transit shelter to improve accessibility and safety
- Completing essential sewer and water upgrades
The Government of Canada is contributing at total of $2.015 million to the overall renewal project. This previously announced funding is a combination of the federal share of the Accelerated Regional Street Renewal program ($1.935 million) and $80,000 from the Canada Community Building Fund (now the Community Stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund) for the Transit upgrades.
The Province of Manitoba is providing $1.935 million through their share of the Accelerated Regional Street Renewal program.
All sewer and water renewal costs are being funded by the City of Winnipeg.
Initial work on the project began in late May. The improvements should be completed by late 2026.
