Safety Reminder from WFPS

In the past 24 hours, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to garage fires on St. Martin Boulevard, Downing Street, and Inkster Boulevard. While these fires remain under investigation, residents can take steps to reduce the risk of winter-related fires.

Block heater and extension cord safety

  • Never plug in your vehicle inside an attached or detached garage. Fires can start in garages and spread quickly to your home.
  • Inspect block heater and extension cords for frays, cracks, or damage before plugging in your vehicle outdoors. Replace damaged cords immediately.
  • If you accidentally drive away with the extension cord still plugged in, replace it and have a licensed mechanic check your block heater cord.
  • Avoid overloading extension cords or using them as permanent wiring.
  • Do not run cords through walls, doorways, ceilings, floors, or under rugs or mats. Covered cords trap heat and can cause fires.
  • Keep cords out of water or snow.

Space Heater Safety

  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, such as furniture, curtains, and bedding.
  • Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet - never use extension cords or power bars.
  • Turn off space heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • Use heaters with an automatic shut-off feature in case they tip over.
  • Regularly inspect cords and plugs for damage. Replace the heater if you see frayed wires or cracks.
