Winnipeggers invited to Name that Plow

Released: November 20, 2025 at 1:18 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg’s first snowplow naming contests is now live.

We’re inviting Winnipeggers of all ages – whether kids or just kids at heart – to submit creative names for 12 big machines and a team of pathway plows.

“We know Winnipeg is full of creative kids and we can’t wait to put some of that creativity to work for our hard-working snow machines,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “Other cities have ended up with machines called things like Buzz Iceclear and Snowbi-Gone Kenobi. I’m so excited to see what Winnipeggers come up with.”

We’re accepting individual entries for the 12 heavy machines, which include six grading machines and six loaders. These machines are part of a tireless group of equipment that help keep streets clear and drivable every winter.

The pathway plows keep sidewalks and pathways clean and safe for pedestrians and cyclists. We're looking for creative classrooms to submit their best team name for this group of plows.

“Winters are long, and cold and can be a bit dull,” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works. “This is our way of adding a little fun and excitement to these cold months.”

Write-in entries can be submitted online today through December 5, 2025.

On December 8, we’ll publish our 30 favorite entries in each category and open up the final decision to Winnipeggers via an online vote.

Voting will be open December 8-31, 2025. We’ll notify the winners on January 7, 2026.

The 12 individual winners will be invited to a special announcement on or around January 13, 2025. We’ll have custom name plates printed for each of them as a keepsake of their win.

The winning classroom entry will get a pizza party at City Hall with Mayor Scott Gillingham.
