Winnipeg, MB – Today, the City of Winnipeg and partners recognized site upgrades at Old Market Square (275 Bannatyne Ave.) that included replacing the grassy area in front of the Cube stage with artificial turf.
Along with 315 square meters of newly installed turf, the project also included improved drainage at the site. Old Market Square is home to Winnipeg’s annual Fringe Festival and Jazz Festival events. The area in front of the Cube is also converted into a public skating rink each winter.
“Old Market Square is the heart of so many iconic events in our city, from the Fringe and Jazz Festivals to Nuit Blanche and the daily gatherings of residents and visitors,” said Councillor Vivian Santos, Point Douglas. “The grassy area in front of the Cube simply couldn’t withstand the heavy use year after year and maintaining it was both costly and unsustainable. By investing in artificial turf, we’ve created a more durable, economical, and welcoming space that can handle the thousands of people who enjoy this spot every season.”
“Upgrading the area in front of the Cube to turf is a small change that will make a really big difference for people attending festivals or just spending time in Old Market Square,” said Kenny Boyce, City Manager of Film & Special Events. “The turf will be much lower maintenance for City staff and far easier to convert into an ice rink in the winter.”
The project budget of $100,000 was funded through the 2023 Parks and Recreation Enhancement Program.
