Construction season kicks off as Winnipeg continues paving the way to smoother transportation

Winnipeg, MB – Warmer weather has arrived, which means so too has the city’s annual construction season.

Some $164.61 million is budgeted for local and regional street improvements in 2025. A number of these projects also include funding for improved active transportation infrastructure.

Crews will work on nearly 150 lane kilometres of road, bridge, and active transportation infrastructure over the coming months.

Nearly all scheduled projects have been tendered and have either already started or will start shortly.

“We’re making record investments in road renewal over the next several years,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “These upgrades will make it safer and smoother for people to get around, whether they’re driving, cycling, or walking. I want to thank Winnipeggers for their patience as this work gets done.”

This summer will see continued rehabilitation work on the Pembina Highway Bridges over the La Salle River and work begin on the Pembina Highway Overpass at Abinojii Mikanah. Interim repairs will happen on the Louise Bridge through the early part of summer and Midtown Bridge at Donald Street in the fall.

The Regional and Local Street Renewal program includes work on the following major corridors:

  • Inkster Boulevard – Aikins Street to Landsdowne avenue (second year of two-year project)
  • McGregor Street – McAdam Avenue to Church Avenue
  • Westbound Abinojii Mikanah – St. Anne’s Road to River Road (second year of two-year project)
  • Dugald Road – Plessis Road to Ravenhurst Street

Full lists of road, bridge, and active transportation projects are outlined in the multi-year Capital Budget.

We encourage Winnipeggers to review two interactive maps to stay updated on both traffic impacts due to construction and roadway improvements:

  • Our lane closures map shows all lanes of traffic affected by any type of closure (from utilities work to private construction to road renewals)
  • Our road construction map illustrates all scheduled roadway improvements, their timeline, and their traffic impacts

Residents can also download and use Waze to find the fastest route.

Waze is a free, real-time traffic and navigation app that shares traffic information from the City's Transportation Management Centre (TMC) as well as tips submitted by other drivers.
