Winnipeg, MB – Today, the Government of Canada, Province of Manitoba, and City of Winnipeg celebrated the opening of a new 3,000-square-foot accessible spray pad and other park features at Bronx Park Community Centre (720 Henderson Hwy.).
“Accessible, inclusive spaces like the new spray pad at Bronx Park Community Centre help strengthen our communities and improve quality of life,” said the Honourable Kevin Lamoureux, Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, on behalf of the Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada. “We are proud to support projects that give families more opportunities to stay active, connect with one another, and enjoy public spaces close to home.”
“Councillor Schreyer was excited about this project and eagerly contributed a portion of his ward allowance, knowing that many of the families who would enjoy the spray pad lived in his ward,” said Jim Maloway, MLA for Elmwood. “The opening of this new spray pad will bring endless summer fun to the community."
“This new spray pad is a great addition for families in Elmwood – East Kildonan and North Kildonan,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “It’s an example of what we can accomplish when all levels of government work together with the community. I also want to recognize the late Councillor Jason Schreyer, whose advocacy helped make this project happen. This space will be well-used and well-loved for years to come.”
“We’re thrilled to celebrate the opening of this new accessible spray pad and upgraded park features at Bronx Park Community Centre,” said Councillor Vivian Santos, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. “This revitalized space offers a welcoming environment for families, children, and residents of all ages to enjoy outdoor recreation in the heart of the community. Investments like this one help promote active living, accessibility, and a stronger sense of connection in our neighbourhoods.”
“The Bronx Park spray pad is a fantastic new amenity for families in both Elmwood – East Kildonan and North Kildonan,” said Jeff Browaty, Councillor for North Kildonan. “The project was truly a collaborative effort, and it would not have been possible without the late Councillor Jason Schreyer’s support and dedication to the community. Our combined resources, along with the Government of Canada and Province of Manitoba, brought this vision to life. This space will offer families a place to cool off, connect, and create lasting memories for years to come.”
“I am more than excited to see the dream of a spray pad at Bronx Park Community Centre come to life,” said Evan Comstock, President, Bronx Park Community Centre. “We are thankful for everyone involved for their vision and dedication to make it a reality. This new, accessible spray pad removes barriers and opens up recreational possibilities and many positive memories at Bronx Park.”
In addition to a new accessible spray pad, the project includes concrete pathways, seating areas (including benches and picnic tables), shade structures, a water fountain, a bike rack, and upgraded landscaping.
Council approved funding for the project through the COVID-19 Economic Response and Recovery Plan, which focuses on enhancing active transportation, improving regional park infrastructure, and adding accessible recreational amenities in underserved areas of the city. The budget for the project is estimated at approximately $1 million, with $913,000 funded through the federal Canada Community-Building Fund and $87,000 from the City of Winnipeg.
