Statement from Winnipeg City Council on the Passing of Councillor Jason Schreyer

Released: April 30, 2025 at 11:14 a.m.

We are deeply saddened to learn that Councillor Jason Schreyer has passed away.

First elected in 2014, Jason served the people of Elmwood–East Kildonan with passion and conviction. He was a strong and independent voice in the Council chamber, always focused on fighting for the residents of his community and keeping life affordable for Winnipeggers. Lately, he was especially focused on food security, working on a project to ensure everyone in his ward had access to basic necessities.

Jason came from a proud tradition of public service as the son of former Premier and Governor General Ed Schreyer and Lily Schreyer. He carried that legacy forward with a strong sense of purpose and a connection to the Elmwood–East Kildonan neighbourhood, where his family’s roots run deep.

Beyond politics, Jason brought joy and creativity to those around him. He had a love of music, often being the first to grab the mic at karaoke, delighting colleagues with performances at national conferences, sharing his talents in multiple languages at Folklorama, and even offering a song as a prayer at the start of Council meetings.

As Jason’s Council colleagues, we want to extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed by all of us.

Out of respect for Jason, City Council has adjourned its meeting scheduled for today. Flags at all City of Winnipeg buildings will be lowered to half-mast in his honour.
