Released: March 22, 2025 at 2:45 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires this morning.

Aberdeen Avenue fire

At 9:14 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a house in the 1000 block of Aberdeen Avenue.

Firefighters attacked the fire, declaring the fire under control at 9:35 a.m. Firefighters searched the house to ensure no one was inside. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Roslyn Road fire

At 10:10 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, WFPS responded to reports of a fire in an apartment building in the 100 block of Roslyn Road.

Firefighters attacked the fire, declaring it under control within an hour. No injuries were reported.

Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental and may have been related to improper disposal of smoking materials. No damage estimates are available.

To avoid a fire, follow these tips:

  • Use an ashtray made of deep and wide metal filled partway with sand or water to put out smoking materials.
  • If you put butts in the garbage, douse them with water first.
  • Never use a planter pot as an ashtray because potting soil is a mix of dirt and organic materials that can catch on fire.  If you put your butt out in a planter, it can smoulder for several hours, heat up and crack the planter. This adds oxygen to the smouldering butt and can lead to a fire that can quickly spread to a building hours after the butt was put in the planter.
  • To avoid a grass fire, never throw butts out a car window and never extinguish smoking materials on the ground.
