Annual Winter Route Parking Ban starts December 6

Released: November 29, 2024 at 9:18 a.m.
No parking on designated streets daily between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – Our annual winter route parking ban is coming.

The ban will start at 2 a.m. on Friday, December 6 and be in place until further notice.

Once the ban begins, parking is prohibited overnight (from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m.) on designated streets.

We encourage Winnipeggers to look out for both “Winter Route” and “Snow Route” signs before parking.

People can find out if the ban applies to any address or location by:

Remember that the ban is not weather-event dependent. You cannot park on designated routes during designated hours every day starting December 6. This includes times it is not snowing and even if a street looks to have been recently cleared.

The exception to this is when a residential parking ban is on. We will lift the winter route parking ban for the duration of residential plowing to allow people more parking options.

Winter routes are major thoroughfares and are used often by emergency vehicles. This makes them priority routes for snow clearing and ice control activities all winter long. Crews can do a more effective and efficient job if major routes are clear of vehicles overnight.

Vehicles parked in violation of the ban may receive a $100 ticket ($75 if paid early). They may also be towed to the towing company’s compound.

We will keep the ban on until weather conditions no longer require it. We expect this to be in spring 2025 and will provide a notification once we have lifted it.

NEW FOR THIS YEAR:

We encourage Winnipeggers to use our new interactive snow map to stay up-to-date on our operations.

This map is a one-stop shop for all snow information. It illustrates all the important information, from parking bans and route designations to clearing status on roads, sidewalks, and pathways.

People can view information for any address within Winnipeg or look at a larger area to get a snapshot of a given community.

It can be filtered to show either all seasonal parking restrictions in effect at the location or the status of snow clearing operations in real-time.

Winnipeggers can stay in the know on snow by visiting winnipeg.ca/snow.
