Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to fires on Balgona Road and Young Street Friday night.
Balgona Road fire
At 6 p.m. on Friday, May 24, WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a vacant house on Balgona Road.
When they arrived on scene, flames and smoke were coming from the structure. Crews entered the house and used hose lines to put the fire out. It was declared under control at 6:40 p.m.
Crews completed a search of the house and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.
Damage estimates are not available at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Young Street fire
Later that night at 9:03 p.m., WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a commercial building in the first 100 block of Young Street.
Heavy flames and smoke were pouring from the building when crews arrived on scene. They launched a defensive fire attack, using hose lines and an aerial ladder truck to extinguish the fire. It was declared under control at 11:33 p.m.
One person self-evacuated from the building before crews arrived and was assessed by paramedics, but not transported to hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Residents of nearby suites were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. A Winnipeg Transit bus was on scene to provide shelter until they could return to their suites.
Due to extensive fire, smoke and water damage, emergency demolition of the building was ordered.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
