Released: April 18, 2024 at 2:16 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to two structures fires the morning of Thursday, April 18, 2024.

Nairn Avenue fire
At 7:13 a.m. WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a one-and-a-half-storey house in the 300 block of Nairn Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, smoke was coming from the structure. They launched an interior fire attack, using a fire suppression tool and hose lines to put the flames out. They declared the fire under control at 8:14 a.m.

Firefighters conducted a search of the building and found one dog who was declared deceased. No other injuries were reported.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by a malfunctioning clothes dryer.

Residents can reduce the risk of dryer fires by following these tips:

  • Make sure your dryer is installed by a professional
  • Have your dryer serviced regularly by a professional to ensure it is in good working order
  • Do not use your dryer without a lint filter and always clean the filter after each load of laundry
  • Periodically check the venting system to ensure there is no lint buildup and it is not damaged, crushed, or restricted
  • Make sure the outdoor vent flap opens when the dryer is running
  • Never leave a dryer running when you are not home

Grierson Avenue fire
At 10:35 a.m., WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a single-storey house in the 600 block of Grierson Avenue.

Smoke was coming from the house when crews arrived on scene. They launched a fire attack and quickly put the fire out. It was declared under control at 10:58 a.m.

Residents of the home safely self-evacuated before crews arrived on scene. No injuries were reported.

Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction.
