Released: April 7, 2024 at 10:30 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two notable fires last night.

Osborne Street fire

At 10:37 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, the WFPS responded to a monitored fire alarm activation in the City of Winnipeg’s Fort Rouge Transit Garage.

When fire crews arrived to the scene, they found a fire involving a bus in one of the parking bays. They quickly worked to apply water to the fire, declaring the fire under control at 11:00 p.m. Crews then worked to ventilate the garage, ensuring it was safe for Transit employees.

A search of the garage was completed and no occupants were found. There were no injuries reported.

Damage estimates are not available at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Preliminary observations do not suggest the fire was suspicious.

Andrews Street fire

At 10:52 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-a-half storey house in the 100 block of Andrews Street.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke coming from the house. They entered and fought the fire from inside, declaring the fire under control at 11:17 p.m.

All occupants of the house safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was deployed to assist displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical hair straightener being placed in close proximity to combustible materials.

Damage estimates are not available at this time.
