Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to fires on Princess Street, Sargent Avenue, Johnson Avenue West, and Beliveau Road.
Princess Street fire
At 9:01 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, the WFPS responded to an automatic fire alarm in a six-storey apartment building in the 300 block of Princess Street.
When crews arrived, they found light smoke inside the building and located a small fire. They launched an interior fire attack and quickly put the fire out.
No injuries were reported. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Sargent Avenue fire
At 1:18 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, the WFPS responded to reports of fire at a commercial building in the 700 block of Sargent Avenue.
When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the structure and one person who was trapped inside. Crews entered the building and rescued the person. Paramedics assessed the individual and they were transported to hospital in critical condition.
Initially, crews launched a defensive attack, fighting the fire from outside, but were able to enter the building to finish putting the fire out. It was declared under control at 2:33 a.m.
No damage estimates are available at this time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Residents are asked to exercise caution in the area, as water used to fight the fire has frozen and created slippery conditions. City of Winnipeg crews are monitoring conditions and applying sand and de-icing agents to roadways and sidewalks as required to improve traction.
Johnson Avenue West fire
At 8:09 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, the WFPS responded to reports of fire in a vacant two-storey house in the 100 block of Johnson Avenue West.
When crews arrived, smoke was coming from the structure. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 9:25 a.m.
Crews completed a search of the building and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.
The structure experienced smoke, water, and fire damage. Damage estimates are not available. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Beliveau Road fire
At 8:28 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20, the WFPS responded to reports of fire in a detached garage in the 300 block of Beliveau Road.
Upon arrival to the scene, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage and nearby mobile home. They also observed downed power lines. They launched a fire attack, and brought the flames under control 8:52 a.m.
Manitoba Hydro was contacted to address the downed power lines.
Residents of the home safely self-evacuated before crews arrived. No injuries were reported.
