Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Mountain Avenue and Fountain Street

Released: February 3, 2024 at 8:21 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to two fires on Friday evening.

Mountain Avenue fire

At 7:47 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2024, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire involving neighbouring two-storey houses in the 500 block of Mountain Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they found the two homes fully-engulfed in flames and smoke. Crews immediately evacuated neighbouring homes on both sides before launching a defensive fire attack. They used handlines and aerial ladders to apply water to the fire while also working to keep the fire from spreading to additional neighbouring structures.

Aerial and thermal imaging views from the WFPS drone were used to help direct water streams and locate hotspots. Once fire conditions improved, crews were able to transition to an interior fire attack. The fire was declared under control at 9:46 p.m.

All occupants of the houses safely self-evacuated. No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team was deployed to assist displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.

Both homes suffered significant smoke, fire and water damage. Damage estimates are not available at this time. The fire is under investigation.

Fountain Street fire

At 7:01 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2024, the WFPS responded to a fire in two-storey apartment building in the 200 block of Fountain Street. The fire was discovered by a WFPS crew attending an unrelated medical call at the location. The crew alerted the WFPS 9-1-1 Communications Centre and additional crews were dispatched to the scene.

Smoke and flames were encountered in the building. When the additional crews arrived, firefighters entered the building and fought the fire from the interior. The fire was quickly brought under control.

Some residents self-evacuated from the building and some were able to shelter in place in their suites. No injuries were reported.

The fire was contained to the suite where it originated. Damage estimates are not available at this time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
