Winnipeg, MB – At 12:26 a.m. on Sunday, December 3, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey duplex in the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue.
When crews arrived to the scene, they found heavy smoke coming from the structure. Crews initially fought the fire from the interior of the building, but due to deteriorating conditions, they were forced to exit and transition to a defensive fire attack while also protecting neighbouring homes.
All but one occupant of the building safely self-evacuated. Firefighters assisted one individual in evacuating. The individual was assessed by on-scene paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
Both neighbouring homes were temporarily evacuated as a precaution. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team was deployed to assist the displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The building suffered significant damages and is considered a complete loss. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
