Winnipeg, MB – At 8:14 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a fire in a two-storey apartment building in the 400 block of William Avenue. The fire was discovered and reported by an on-duty WFPS crew that was driving through the area.
As they drove by, they found smoke and flames coming from the building. Once additional crews arrived on scene, firefighters launched an interior fire attack. The fire was declared under control at 9:16 p.m.
Residents of the building safely self-evacuated. No injuries were reported. Firefighters located one cat while doing a search of the building. The animal was brought to safety and placed in the care of the Winnipeg Animal Services Agency.
A Winnipeg Transit bus was sent to the scene to provide temporary shelter to those who evacuated. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team was deployed to assist those displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
