Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Furby Street

Released: November 16, 2023 at 8:21 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 12:11 a.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a report of a fire alarm activation in a three-storey apartment building in the 500 block of Furby Street. The 9-1-1 call came from an on-duty member of the Downtown Community Safety Partnership who was patrolling the area and heard the alarm.

When WFPS crews arrived on scene, they found smoke in the building. Crews attacked the fire from inside the building, declaring the fire under control at 12:35 p.m. Damage was contained to the area where the fire originated.

Some residents self-evacuated from the building. Others were assisted by firefighters. No injuries were reported. Most residents were able to return to their suites once smoke was ventilated from the building.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
