Mayor Gillingham Reflects on a Year of Progress and Momentum as He Celebrates First Anniversary in Office

As he commemorates the one-year anniversary of being sworn into office, Mayor Scott Gillingham is engaging with Winnipeggers both in-person and online to share updates on the progress of his campaign commitments, and the ongoing efforts of City Council to implement its Strategic Priorities Action Plan.

To date, approximately 30% of Gillingham’s campaign commitments have been fulfilled, with progress underway on another 25%.

“We’re off to a good start, but there’s a lot more work ahead” said Gillingham. “Collaboration – among councillors, with other levels of government, and with community leaders – is key as we continue to focus on building a healthier, stronger city.”

Gillingham noted some of the major accomplishments from the past year include:

  • Council’s endorsement of the Strategic Priorities Action Plan
  • Tougher regulations and fines for derelict and vacant buildings
  • Expansion of 24/7 Safe Spaces and the introduction of a new extreme weather shelter policy
  • Increased funding for active transportation and urban forestry
  • Reactivation of the joint WPS/RCMP warrant unit and permanent funding for the Downtown Community Safety Partnership

Looking ahead, Gillingham said he is excited about 2024 launch of the Community Safety Team and Neighbourhood Action Teams, the development of CentrePlan 2050, and seeing progress on major downtown projects such as Portage Place, Railside At The Forks, and Market Lands.

To mark this milestone, Mayor Gillingham will tour several local organizations and businesses today.  His day started at Sam’s Place (Rorie St), and included a visit with students at City Hall, a City Council meeting, and a sod turning for an expanded facility at Boeing (Murray Park Rd). This afternoon’s itinerary includes visits to Wittypeg (Regent Ave E) and Georgina’s Sweets & Boutique (Plessis Road), a donation drop-off for Koats for Kids at Fire Station #21 (Regent Ave), and a tour of the South Sudanese Community Centre (Dagmar St).

Gillingham is also releasing a “Year One Status Update” on social media, along with a series of videos reflecting on the last year and looking ahead to 2024.
