Released: October 29, 2023 at 9:22 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two recent high-rise fires.

Kennedy Street fire

At 11:49 p.m. on Saturday, October, 28, 2023, the WFPS responded to a monitored alarm in a high-rise apartment building in the 400 block of Kennedy Street.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke in the building. With the potential for high life hazards when dealing with a high-rise, a second alarm was called which increased the number of crews on scene. Firefighters located the fire and quickly extinguished it. They then worked to ventilate the smoke from the building.

Residents were directed to shelter in place. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. At this time, damage estimates are not available.

Main Street fire

When crews arrived to the scene, they found smoke in the building. A fire was located in one of the suites. The fire had been kept under control by the building’s sprinkler system, and firefighters were quickly able to extinguish the remaining hot spots.

Some occupants of the building self-evacuated, while others were able to shelter in place. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. At this time, damage estimates are not available.
