Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to structure fires on St. John’s Avenue and Alexander Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – Overnight, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of two structure fires.

St. John’s Avenue

At 1:56 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 200 block of St. John’s Avenue. The initial call came from Winnipeg Police Service general patrol officers who were in the area. The Winnipeg Police Service’s Air 1 helicopter helped provide situational awareness to the firefighters.

At the scene, crews found smoke in the building. Firefighters attacked the fire from the outside until it was safe to enter the building to continue extinguishing the fire. Crews declared the fire under control at 2:26 a.m.

All occupants either safely self-evacuated or sheltered in place until the fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Alexander Avenue

At 4:08 a.m. on September 13, 2023, WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a side-by-side home in the 400 block of Alexander Avenue. At the scene, crews saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the house.

Residents of the home and two neighbouring homes were evacuated. Firefighters searched other nearby homes to ensure no one was inside.

Firefighters attacked the fire from the inside, declaring the fire under control at 5:08 a.m. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
