Winnipeg, MB – At 6:18 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a home in the 1300 block of Templeton Avenue.
At the scene, crews saw flames and smoke coming from the house. Firefighters attacked the fire from inside the house, declaring the fire under control at 6:48 p.m.
No injuries were reported, and no damage estimates are available. Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental and related to cooking.
To avoid a fire like this, consider these safety tips:
- Always stay in the kitchen when cooking.
- Keep oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains away from the stovetop. These items can quickly catch on fire.
- Heat oil slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the top of the pan with a metal lid.
- Never use water to put out an oil fire.
