Winnipeg, MB – At 7:17 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a four-storey apartment building in the 200 block of Quail Ridge Road.
When crews arrived to the scene, they found a fully-involved fire, with heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. Crews fought the fire from the outside of the building, using hand lines and aerial ladders to apply water to the fire. The fire was declared under control at 9:06 p.m.
All occupants of the building safely self-evacuated. One firefighter was assessed by on-scene paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
Crews searched the building and rescued several animals, reuniting the pets with their owners. The City of Winnipeg's Animal Services Agency was dispatched to the scene to assist with care for the pets.
It is estimated that the building has approximately 45 suites and that up to 180 residents were displaced by the fire. The City’s Emergency Social Services team is on scene, working with the Canadian Red Cross, to assist residents in finding temporary accommodations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The building sustained significant smoke, fire, and water damage. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
