Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Elgin Avenue and Simcoe Street

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires early this morning.

Elgin Avenue Fire

At 5:03 a.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2022, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a single-storey house in the 1800 block of Elgin Avenue.

Once on scene, crews encountered heavy smoke conditions. An offensive attack was launched, and crews declared the fire under control at 5:47 a.m.

Firefighters searched the building, but no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

As a precaution, crews evacuated one occupant of a neighbouring house.

The building suffered damage to the attic and interior. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Simcoe Street Fire

At 5:52 a.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2022, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a single-storey house in the 300 block of Simcoe Street.

When crews arrived on-scene, they encountered heavy smoke coming from the building. Crews initiated an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 6:23 a.m.

Multiple occupants self-evacuated prior to crew arrival.

Given the large number of patients involved, additional paramedic units were called for assistance in assessing and transporting patients, including the Major Incident Response Vehicle (MIRV).

Nine patients have been transported to hospital, including:

  • One child was transported by ambulance to hospital in critical condition
  • Four adults were transported by ambulance to hospital in unstable condition
  • Four children were transported by MIRV to hospital in stable condition

The house suffered extensive fire, smoke and water damage. No damage estimates are available at this time. The fire remains under investigation.
