Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Portage Avenue Fire

Released: February 10, 2019 at 10:23 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:57 a.m. on February 10, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of a fire in commercial strip mall in the 900 block of Portage Avenue. Once on scene crews found smoke coming from the eaves of the building. An interior, offensive attack was launched and the fire was quickly knocked down, thanks in part to the building’s sprinkler system which helped control the fire before crews’ arrival. The fire was knocked down at 8:13 a.m.

Crews then went to work ventilating the building. The strip mall unit where the fire occurred suffered minimal fire damage but significant smoke damage. Adjoining businesses saw minimal smoke damage. There were no occupants in the building at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The WFPS Fire Investigator determined the fire was caused by a malfunctioning bathroom fan. No damage estimates are available at this time.
