Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: St. Mary Avenue Fire

Released: January 31, 2019 at 4:24 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:42 p.m. on January 31, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to a fire alarm in a 17-storey high-rise apartment complex in the 500 block of St. Mary Avenue. Once on scene, crews located a fire on the 14th floor and declared a second alarm in order to increase the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on the scene.

Crews were able to keep the fire contained to a single suite, declaring it under control at 3:12 p.m. The suite suffered extensive fire, smoke and water damage. Several other suites experienced minor water damage.

Residents from three floors were evacuated. One occupant, who resided in the suite where the fire occurred, was assessed on scene and transported to hospital in unstable condition. No other injuries were reported.

Evacuated residents are expected to be able to return to their suites once crews complete their work on scene.

The cause of the fire will be under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Traffic on St. Mary Avenue will remain impacted until crews clear the scene.
