Winnipeg, MB - The City would like to remind residents to take necessary precautions during periods of extremely cold temperatures. The following are some winter safety tips to keep in mind:
- Older adults and very young children should avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.
- Check on older friends, relatives, and neighbours who live alone.
- Recognize the symptoms of hypothermia: confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering. If these symptoms are present, seek immediate medical attention. Severe hypothermia can be life threatening.
- Bring pets inside and limit the amount of time they spend outside.
Residents should call 9-1-1 immediately if they see another person who appears to be in need of assistance or is injured due to extreme cold. When calling, be prepared to report the person’s location and condition, and whenever possible, remain with the individual until emergency crews arrive.
The City of Winnipeg is inviting members of the public to come in and warm up in civic facilities during operating hours as extremely cold temperatures persist.
City facilities that can provide a comfortable place to warm-up include City Hall, Winnipeg Public Libraries, swimming pools, and Leisure Centres.
For operating hours at City facilities during the holiday season, please check City of Winnipeg - Holiday Hours or contact 311. Please note these facilities are closed tomorrow, the New Year’s Day statutory holiday.
