Winnipeg, MB – At approximately 10:05 a.m. on Monday, October 22, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services (WFPS) crews responded to a fire at a commercial business in the area of Saunders Street and Gunn Road in the R.M. of Springfield involving asphalt tanks. WFPS responded to assist at the request of the R.M. of Springfield Fire and Rescue Service.
At 4:30 p.m. yesterday crews declared the fire under control. Incident command was transferred back to the Springfield Fire and Rescue Service. Their crews remained on scene into last night to continue to monitor and cool the asphalt tanks.
The 800 metre evacuation area was lifted at 5:30 p.m. yesterday and residents no longer need to shelter in place. The Transcona Kinsmen Centennial Pool and the Transcona Library have re-opened today for normal operations.
The WFPS would like to thank all responders and partner agencies involved in the incident yesterday.
“This fire highlighted not only the exceptional expertise and knowledge of our responders but also the high-level of collaboration between many agencies to be able to manage an incident of this scale,” said WFPS Chief John Lane. “We regularly work and train with our partner agencies so that when an emergency happens we are prepared.”
The cause of this fire is under investigation by the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
