Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Khalsa Street & Mountain Avenue fires

Released: September 19, 2018 at 9:21 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 1:36 a.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of smoke in the 100 block of Khalsa Street. Once on scene, it was quickly determined the source of the smoke was fire in a single-storey wood-framed home, with flames coming through the roof.

Crews initiated an offensive attack and through the use of the WFPS’s new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or drone), they were able to identify hot spots, bringing the fire under control quicker while using less water. The fire was declared under control at 2:26 a.m.

All occupants of the home had self-evacuated prior to crews’ arrival. Following assessment by WFPS paramedic crews, three family members – two children and one adult – were transported to hospital in stable condition for further assessment and evaluation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.

At 7:35 a.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of fire in the 300 block of Mountain Avenue. Once on scene, crews launched an offensive attack to extinguish a fire in a three-storey apartment residence, containing damage to a single suite.

All residents of the building had self-evacuated prior to crews’ arrival. No injuries were reported.

It is expected residents will be able to return later today, once WFPS crews complete the ventilation of the building, ensuring it is safe. Traffic on Mountain Avenue is expected to be impacted until this is completed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.
