Winnipeg, MB – The Brenda Leipsic Dog Park has reopened at a temporary location at the northwest corner of Parker Avenue and Georgina Street.
“It’s great to see that area dog owners will regain access to an off-leash dog park until the new Brenda Leipsic Dog Park has been completed,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “I would like to thank Manitoba Hydro for their accommodation toward making this temporary amenity possible for the benefit of residents.”
“I’m thrilled that with the help of Manitoba Hydro, we were able to create a temporary space for dogs and their owners to enjoy for the next year in anticipation of the new, permanent, Brenda Leipsic Dog Park that will be opening in 2019 as part of the Southwest Transitway project,” said Councillor John Orlikow.
The dog park closed to accommodate construction of the Southwest Rapid Transitway until a new park could be built as part of the project. Following discussions with the Brenda Leipsic Dog Parkers Inc. and Manitoba Hydro, a temporary off-leash dog park has opened on Manitoba Hydro’s property until construction of the new dog park is complete in the fall of 2019.
“All the dog parkers of Brenda Leipsic Dog Park are very excited about today’s opening of our temporary dog park and would like to thank everyone involved for making this happen,” said Dan McInnis, Chair of the Brenda Leipsic Dog Parkers Inc. “Our dog park community is looking forward to the completion of Winnipeg’s finest dog park next year and all the benefits it will bring.”
The temporary park is approx. 3.5 acres in size, and can be accessed via Parker Avenue. On-street parking is available on the north side of Parker Avenue.
Following the completion of the Southwest Rapid Transitway, the Brenda Leipsic Dog Park will have a permanent home located off of Hurst Way. Construction of the permanent Brenda Leipsic Dog Park is expected to begin in spring 2019.
