Winnipeg, MB – Residents of Winnipeg have a new spot to beat the heat this summer, as the new Valley Gardens Community Centre at 218 Antrim Road spray pad was officially opened.

“The Government of Canada is proud to invest in important pieces of community infrastructure that allow us to spend quality time with our friends and family,” said the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development. “The Canada 150 program does just that and more for all Canadians.”

“I look forward to seeing the spray pad used by families and friends in our community,” said MaryAnn Mihychuk, Member of Parliament for Kildonan—St. Paul.

“Spray pads are an excellent way to enjoy the summer weather – they are fun and free,” said Councillor Mike Pagtakhan, Point Douglas Ward and Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks. “The new Valley Gardens Community Centre spray pad is another great addition to the community, as it will bring families together while promoting physical activity.”

“I have honoured previous commitments made by the former councillor for the area by working with the administration, the community centre, and other councillors, ensuring the funding and making this outstanding splash pad at Valley Gardens Community Centre a reality,” said Councillor Jason Schreyer, Elmwood – East Kildonan Ward. “This fully accessible facility is an excellent addition to the neighborhood and will be well-used for years to come.”

The new fully-accessible Valley Gardens Community Centre spray pad has three zones for different patrons – tots, families, and teens. The spray pad area also features a new playground and swings, as well as new benches, picnic tables, bike racks, pathways, landscaping and fencing.
The total cost of the project was approximately $800,000. The City of Winnipeg contributed $250,000 toward the project through Parks & Recreation Enhancement, along with support from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program for $250,000, and funding from Waterside Development Corporation in the amount of $300,000.
