Winnipeg, MB – Today, with help from Councillor Mike Pagtakhan, the City of Winnipeg officially opened the new basketball court at Sister MacNamara Park, 780 Ross Avenue. The new court, installed as part of an overall restoration of the park which started in 2017, features new asphalt with court lines, backboards and nets.

“Healthy communities need affordable places to meet and stay fit,” said Mike Pagtakhan, Councillor for Point Douglas and Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks. “Sport is a wonderful way to build neighbourhood comradery and this new basketball court will provide area youth with another option for free recreation.”

In addition to a new basketball court, improvements in the park include new fencing, upgraded lighting, site furniture, and overall site restoration, including site grading, topsoil, and sod. Total cost for these renovations is $130,000 and is being funded from the 2017 and 2018 Parks and Recreation Enhancement Capital Program.

In the fall of 2017 an additional investment of $60,000 was made in preparation for the new enhancements. Earlier work included the demolition of a washroom building and removal of a wading pool, which included the decommissioning of the sewer and water services and removal of the concrete pool basins.

On June 28, 2018, the City opened a new spray pad at the nearby Freight House Recreation Centre.
