Winnipeg, MB – The City has officially opened a new creative space today called ideaMILL – a collaborative makerspace to support Winnipeg's growing arts, technology and innovation communities, located on the newly-renovated third floor of Millennium Library.
“This is a great addition that will help support innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “As a city, we need to encourage and foster the development of new ideas, and this new space will provide our city’s creative thinkers with some of the tools and technology necessary to create and innovate in an accessible and collaborative environment.”
The ideaMILL offers access to maker tools and technology to encourage people to create, experiment and collaborate in a self-directed environment. The space includes:
- A media studio with PCs equipped with graphics and design tools
- Two bookable sound booths for personal recording (one is fully accessible)
- VHS and audio digital conversion
- Photography and videography equipment including a green screen
- 3D printers for makers of all ages
- A craft room with sewing machines and space for creative arts.
The ideaMILL is open to visitors of all ages, and is accessible during Millennium Library’s standard operating hours. The Council approved capital budget (2016) for this project was $500,000. Funding for the sewing machines and the interactive projector was generously provided by the Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library.
