Winnipeg, MB – Committed to improving park amenities in Winnipeg, City Councillor Janice Lukes, South Winnipeg – St. Norbert Ward, and Terry Duguid, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, celebrated the official opening of two newly rebuilt tennis courts and a renovated soccer pitch in Thelma J. Call Park, adjacent to R.H.G. Bonnycastle School located in Waverley Heights at 1100 Chancellor Drive. The improvements occurred during the 2016 and 2017 construction seasons.
The soccer pitch had new top soil added, field grading improved, and new sod laid. New portable soccer goal frames were installed, and the catch basins for the land drainage system were repaired. The cost for these improvements was $151,000.
New tennis net stanchions, benches, waste receptacles, tennis nets and perimeter fencing were installed along with a Plexi-pave sport court surfacing and court lines. The cost for these improvements was $187,685.
"Thanks to the Government of Canada's Canada 150 contribution, children and families in Waverley Heights and south Winnipeg will be able to use the new tennis courts and renovated soccer pitch in Thelma J. Caul Park this summer”, said Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, Terry Duguid. “Community infrastructure projects like these bring us together, and give us green spaces where we can enjoy time with family and friends."

Call Park are well used and a key destination for families and youth in the area.“ said City Councillor Janice Lukes, South Winnipeg – St. Norbert Ward. “The two brand new tennis courts, plus a new soccer field made possible through an excellent partnership and working relationship with the Government of Canada, will provide increased recreational opportunities for the residents of our rapidly growing South Winnipeg communities.”
A Canada 150 program contribution of $124,000 was awarded to match $124,000 in the City’s Athletic Fields Improvement Capital Fund for the restoration of these outdoor sport facilities. The remaining $90,685 for the upgrades came from the City’s Parks and Recreation Enhancement Program Capital Fund. The total cost of the work at Thelma J. Call Park was $338,685.
