Winnipeg, MB – Today, the Norquay Community Centre’s satellite building located at 5 Beaconsfield St. was officially renamed the Rita Richard Recreation Centre. Richard was born in Point Douglas and was involved in the community centre for most of her life. As a child, she participated in programs, in her teenage years she was a volunteer, and as an adult she was the general manager.
“I’m pleased that the Norquay Community Centre now has permanent recognition of Rita Richard,” said Ross Eadie, City Councillor for Mynarski Ward. “Rita represented what it means to be a community leader, and her legacy will not be forgotten.”
“Rita Richard had a heart of gold, she was compassionate, and dedicated to the children and youth that she served,” said Marlene Amell, Executive Director, General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres. “She truly was the backbone of the Norquay Community Centre.”
"It's an honour and privilege to have Norquay's satellite building named after our beloved Rita Richard,” said Cassandra Richard, Rita Richard’s daughter. “It's a constant reminder of all the hard work, time and dedication she had put into Norquay Community Centre over the years. Rita Richard was, and will remain, a true beacon of Norquay Community Centre in this thriving community."
On January 25, 2018, City Council voted to rename the Norquay Community Centre satellite building the Rita Richard Recreation Centre. The centre provides recreation programs and services for the North Point Douglas neighbourhood, including children and youth programming, and a Graffiti Art Program.
