Winnipeg, MB - At an event this morning, Mayor Brian Bowman and Councillor Mike Pagtakhan officially broke ground on the new Freight House Recreation Centre spray pad.
“Spray pads are a great way to cool off during Winnipeg’s hot summer months,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “A spray pad at Freight House Recreation Centre will provide an affordable recreation option for summer activities for families and children, and I am pleased we were able to support its construction this year.”
“By adding a new accessible spray pad to the Freight House Recreation Centre, we are able to build on the success of past improvements at the site like the skate park, play structure and hockey rink. I’m confident that with the addition of the spray pad, the facility will continue to be a popular and affordable recreation destination for area families,” said Councillor Mike Pagtakhan, City Councillor for Point Douglas and Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks. “I look forward to opening the new spray pad when the weather is warmer and inviting the community to enjoy the new feature!”
Located at 200 Isabel Street, adjacent to the Freight House Outdoor Pool, the new, fully-accessible spray pad will have three zones for different patrons – toddlers, children, and youth. The spray pad area will also include the installation of benches, picnic tables, pathways and landscaping.
Construction on the spray pad has just begun, with an expected completion date in early summer 2018. The Council approved budget for the project is just over $1 million.
With the addition of a spray pad at Freight House Recreation Centre, Winnipeg will have a total of 22 spray pads available for use across this city this summer.
