Small section of Westview Park closed for maintenance

Released: November 21, 2017 at 2:57 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – A small section on the south side of Westview Park, located at 1 Midland Street, will be closed for landfill cap repair starting on November 23, 2017.
Westview Park is a multi-use park, located on one of Winnipeg’s closed landfills. The landfill operated from 1875 to 1948, and accepted material, primarily ash and glass, from Winnipeg’s old garbage incinerator building.

The south side of the park has a very steep hill, which is frequented by people looking for a challenging workout. Over time, this area has worn down and exposed some of the waste underneath.

The section being repaired is adjacent to the section that was repaired in spring of 2016. The repairs will include covering it with compost from the City’s leaf and yard waste composting program. Native grass and wildflower seeds will be planted in the spring of 2018.

Barriers will be placed around the area (approximately 60 metres long by 10 metres wide) until the grass and flowers are fully established. It is expected the barriers will be in place for at least a year.
