Winnipeg, MB - Today, representatives from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, Winnipeg Firefighters Historical Society and the United Firefighters of Winnipeg Local 867 announced the honourary designation of Maple Street, between Higgins Avenue and Henry Avenue, as Firefighter Way.
“I would like to thank the members of the Winnipeg Firefighters Historical Society for their work in proposing the honourary designation and for their dedication to maintaining one of Canada’s best collections of historical firefighting equipment and records,” said Chief John Lane, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. “The Fire Fighters Museum of Winnipeg, and now the honourary designation of Maple Street to Firefighter Way, will ensure that Winnipeg’s firefighters are remembered for their current and past contributions to public safety.”
The request for a honourary designation of the street was made by the Winnipeg Firefighters Historical Society to commemorate the location of the Fire Fighters Museum of Winnipeg (56 Maple Street) as well as to honour the thousands of firefighters that have represented Winnipeg and the pre-Unicity Communities since the inception of the Winnipeg Fire Department in 1882.
Firefighter Way sign toppers were installed today above Maple Street signage at the intersections of Higgins Avenue, MacDonald Avenue and Henry Avenue. The honourary street designation will be in effect for five years starting today.
