Winnipeg, MB - At an event this morning, Dan Vandal, Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface - Saint Vital, Councillor Schreyer, Councillor Wyatt, Councillor Browaty, Councillor Pagtakhan and Valley Gardens Community Centre President Angela Howie officially turned the sod to begin construction on the new Valley Gardens Community Centre spray pad.
“Parks are spaces where people gather, our children play and communities come together,” said the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada. “The installation of a splash pad along with additional park renovations to the Valley Gardens Community Centre will have tangible and lasting benefits for residents of the community and the surrounding area.”
“This new spray pad will be a welcome attraction in the Elmwood East Kildonan area,” said Jason Schreyer, City Councillor for Elmwood - East Kildonan. “Summer water amenities have been very popular this year, so we look forward to expanding on the amenities offered next year!”
Located at 218 Antrim Road, the new fully-accessible Valley Gardens Community Centre spray pad will have three zones for different patrons – tots, families, and teens. The spray pad area will also feature a new playground and swings, as well as new benches, picnic tables, bike racks, pathways, landscaping and fencing.
Construction on the spray pad will begin in July 2017, with an expected completion date in summer 2018. The City of Winnipeg contributed $250,000 towards the project, along with support from the federal government’s Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program for $250,000, and funding from Waterside Development Corp. in the amount of $300,000 for a total project budget of $800,000.
