Winnipeg, MB - Representatives from the City of Winnipeg and EdgeCorp Developments Ltd., developers of the Park City Commons, were on hand for a sod-turning to mark the official start of construction on the intersection upgrades of Plessis Road and Transcona Boulevard/Kildare Avenue West and the twinning of Transcona Boulevard.

“It is a pleasure to celebrate the construction of these intersection and boulevard upgrades in Transcona,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “As a city, Winnipeg is experiencing tremendous growth and as part of that growth, it is essential that we continue historic investments into our roads.”

“Transcona is a growing community and this $5.5 million project will help to ensure we can continue to grow, improve traffic safety, and ultimately grow the city's tax base, which directly allows us to afford such projects,” said Russ Wyatt, City Councillor for the Transcona ward. “I would like to thank Mayor Bowman and all members of Council for their help and support for this road project and with the Park City Commons, one of Winnipeg's largest infill redevelopment sites.”

The City is in a joint venture with EdgeCorp Developments Ltd. which will see the construction of two additional lanes on the north side of Transcona Boulevard. Once complete, the four-lane divided roadway will extend approximately 750 metres west of Plessis Road, and 140 metres onto Kildare Avenue West.

The improvements to the intersection at Plessis Road and Transcona Boulevard/Kildare Avenue West will improve safety and flow of traffic at the intersection. Upgrades will include dedicated turning lanes with medians, and a separated 3.5 meter combined pedestrian and cycling path to the north of Transcona Boulevard, west of Plessis Road. The twinning of Transcona Boulevard will also see the addition of sewer and water services for future developments.

EdgeCorp Developments Ltd. is managing the project. Construction of the intersection upgrades and the road twinning is estimated at $5.5 million, and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2017.
