Released: March 27, 2017 at 10:30 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - St. Vital residents will be able to enjoy renovations at the Greendell Park Community Centre this summer, Sport, Heritage and Culture Minister Rochelle Squires and City Councillor Brian Mayes (St. Vital) announced this morning.

“These substantial renovations could only be possible with the community spirit, commitment, vision and dedication of the board of directors, volunteers and staff, in partnership with the city and province,” said Squires on behalf of Eileen Clarke, Minister of Indigenous and Municipal Relations. “Our investments will ensure Greendell Park remains a vibrant place of activity and hub of community life in the heart of my constituency of Riel.”

“Greendell Park Community Centre is a neighbourhood destination and a family tradition in St. Vital,” said Councillor Mayes. “These facility upgrades will ensure that families can participate in recreation activities in a comfortable building for years to come.”

Located at 75 Woodlawn Avenue, the Greendell Park Community Centre engages St. Vital residents and provides a number of recreation programs and opportunities to suit the diverse needs and interests of the community, including baseball, dance, soccer, tae kwon do, badminton and pickleball.

Improvements began mid-February 2017 and will include:

  • a new electrical distribution system for the facility;
  • a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system in the office, board rooms, lobby, kitchen and gymnasium;
  • a new ventilation system in the daycare and dressing rooms; and
  • a new suspended ceiling in the lobby.

Provincial funding for the Greendell Park Community Centre is provided through the Manitoba/Winnipeg Infrastructure Agreement, a six-year, $220-million provincial capital funding program providing support for Winnipeg transportation and community recreation infrastructure.

The project is funded equally by the Manitoba government and the City of Winnipeg for a total of $330,000. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2017.
