Winnipeg, MB. - To honour Canada and celebrate our country's 150th birthday, Mayor Brian Bowman is encouraging all Winnipeggers to do three things for Canada as part of the 3 Things for Canada initiative.
The 3 Things for Canada initiative is a national campaign created by the Mayor’s Civic Engagement Committee of The City of Calgary after a challenge from Mayor Naheed Nenshi to get all Canadians to become more involved in their communities. The success of the Calgary campaign has led to the wider spread of the 3 things for Canada initiative across Canada.
“I’d like to invite all Winnipeggers to join me on this journey by pledging to undertake three acts of service, large or small, to help our community,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “Winnipeggers are known for their giving spirits, and this is the perfect opportunity to show that to the rest of the country.”
If every Canadian did three things for their neighbourhood, their nation, and their world this year, it would equate to more than 100 million acts of community building and kindness.
“I encourage all Winnipeggers to be creative,” said Mayor Bowman. “Whether it’s hosting a neighbourhood BBQ, volunteering at a non-profit organization, bringing lunch to a senior in need, or any other act of community service, you can help make a real difference in your community, city, and country.”
“Choose three things you feel passionately about and set a goal to achieve them this year,” said Mayor Bowman.
In addition to doing three acts of service, Canadians around the country are asked to share these good deeds and spread the word, to help inspire others to join the cause. This can be done by posting a photo, video, or comment on the 3 Things for Canada Facebook page, using the hashtag #3ThingsCanada on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, or sending a digital postcard to a friend.
As part of celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, Winnipeg is hosting the 2017 Canada Games this summer and will be welcoming over 4,000 athletes and coaches and more than 20,000 visitors. The Canada Games is the country’s largest multi-sport event for young athletes and will leave behind a lasting legacy of new and enhanced sport facilities, volunteerism, and leadership development that will benefit athletes and the broader community for years to come.
“I look forward to hearing fellow Winnipeggers’ three things for Canada, and working together to make our city even stronger and more vibrant in 2017,” said Mayor Bowman.
