Winnipeg, MB - At an event this afternoon, City Councillor Mike Pagtakhan and the North End Boxing Club officially announced the new North End Youth Boxing Program.
A collaboration between Councillor Mike Pagtakhan and Mr. Harry Black, President of Pan Am Boxing Club, the new North End Youth Boxing Program offers youth ages 12 to 17 an opportunity to learn valuable skills.
The program is comprised of two main components: academics and boxing (fitness). It focuses on rigorous physical activity training, positive mental health, healthy nutrition, and other core value life skills including respect, trust, integrity, and accountability. The program runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays after school at the North End Boxing Club, 1100 College Avenue, with approximately 16 youth in attendance.
“I wanted to create an after school program that would encourage youth to be physically active, to learn valuable study skills, build self-confidence and valuable life skills,” said Mike Pagtakhan, City Councillor for Point Douglas. “The North End Boxing club is a safe environment, and offers an excellent program that will help youth develop leadership skills.”
“Along with teaching the fundamentals of boxing, youth will learn the importance of time management through a 30 minute mandatory homework component of the program. Creating a positive learning environment helps build self-improvement” said Aaron Black, Manager of North End Boxing Club.
“Kudos to Councillor Mike Pagtakhan for his vision in championing this free boxing program! Through this program, youth will learn discipline, develop a powerful work ethic and a strong sense of self-worth that will be utilized for the rest of their lives. It’s an honour for Pan Am Boxing to be part of this initiative,” said Harry Black.
The program will require youth participants to regularly attend the training program, adhere to its core value systems of respect, trust and integrity, and complete homework on-site prior to training.
The City of Winnipeg has provided a number of upgrades in the amount of approximately $60,000 to the North End Boxing Club facility, including:
- new lighting
- a new energy-efficient furnace system
- new flooring
- window replacement
- a new security alarm
- duct cleaning
- painting
- signage
The City also purchased over $30,000 in new equipment for the facility, including two boxing rings.
